Ive been putting this off for a long time now, since im doing alot of front suspension work on my truck, but before I pull it out on the road again (in a month or 2) I wanted to install a mini spool on my 9". You guys think this is a good idea? Its going to be a daily driver, tire size with the spool wont be a problem, im just worried about how the truck will drive after the spool is put in.
I have been building this truck for about a year now so I have not even gone wheeling at all yet, I want to give my truck whatever it can take, I plan to do alot.
well you cant beat a locked rear for offroad, but it will take about 1/3 of your tires tread life away...so you gotta weigh the options..is it worth the money you save not buying a locker???
on the road you wont notice it, except for it resisting tight turns, and being able to break the rea loose eaier in slick conditions
What i'd do is by a locker (lunch box style like the lockright) for the front then find a factory trac lock for the rear, rebuild it, throw a couple extra clutches in it to tighten it up, then your good to go, but how much do you have to spend on the truck?
nothing wrong with running a spool in the rear except tire wear, but if you watch on ebay you can find 31spl detroit lockers used on there all the time, and many times they will go for under $200 these are used nascar units and are still good those guys just don't run them very long, and would rather spend money than take a chance on it going out in a race heck they toss ring, and pinions away after one race, and noting wrong with them at all.
