Decending down a long mountain to save the brakes.
Plowing snow.
Trying to get under way without spinning(snow/ice/wet grass). If you put the tranny in 2nd, it will start out in 2nd and stay in 2nd. This lowers the torque available to the rear wheels vs starting out in 1st.
