I was woundering what the 3-sp auto tranny is in a '85 Ford LTD. I can't get a trans code right now because I don't have the car here. It has a very strange leak in it. I put about 2-qt of ATF into the tranny 2 weeks ago and it was dry this morning. The thing is that there is no red puddle under the car.
Both have a vacuum modulator. This is connected to engine vacuum. When the modulators get old the diaphram leaks, allowing trans fluid to get sucked through the modulator into the engine and burned.
Look on the passenger's side of the trans. You'll see a can with a vacuum line attached. That's it. If you take the line off there probably is trans fluid in it.
I was thinking that it might be something like that because the engine leaks really badly from the fuel pump yet in the past month I've only added 1/2qt of oil. The same thing happened with the old '83 malibu. The tranny fluid kept going down and the engine oil kept going up.
