Aerostar Lawn display
I have a 93 awd xlt Aerostar and it now a lawn display. I think the front differential went. Makes a grinding noise when trying to move it , plus I noticed fluid on the differential and metal flakes.
Before this happen I have replace all CV-joints, shocks, hub bearings, rotors, breaks. Pretty well rebulit the front end.. Did notice a bad front coil spring on the driver side. Was wonder if it would be worth fixing the differntial or saleing for parts? If worth fixing the differential how to do that job?
Plant some flowers in it or even a tree, and your wife will love you for it.
Seriously though.
Did you actually pull the cover on the front dif to check the condition of the pinion and ring gears? Or are you going by sound?
If you are only going by sound, it sounds like you have a bad CV joint or it has been put in wrong. The AWD version requires all four wheel to move, if they don't, it will just sit there trying to put power to the broken axle.
If we do come to find out that the front dif is toast, you can pick up a used one at the junk yard fairly cheap. It is rare that the front dif goes. Just make sure it is the same gear ratio that you have now.
Thanks for the information, I`ll will pull the diff cover and take a look. The two cv-joints/ axles are brand new. I hear noises up front, when under a load so I replace the front axles. I was going by sound, and seem to be comeing from the front end. When I look a saw fluid covering the diff so thought it might be gone. The transmission seem to be working fine before the front end noise came. Wonder if it could be the Tranfercase?
After a slight hesitation my van would still move when the AWD clutch engaged and transferred power to the rear axle. The speed sensors detected the difference between the front shaft that was turning but going nowhere and the rear shaft that was standing still, and engaged the AWD clutch. If it doesn't move at all -- assuming the AWD is functioning -- It may be a problem with the transmission.
