I need to take the drum off of the rear axle to change out the studs. My manuel just says take off the drum but it does not say what bolts need to come off or what needs to be done to get it off. It's a 79 f-250 with a semi-floating rear axle. Please help!
If it is a D60 then remove the bolts that hold the axle in. Remove axle. then you will see a big nut remove it then there will be a washer with tabs for locking then another nut then wheel bearings.
Its similar to removing a rotor off the front.
Most any auto parts store will have the special socket for the axle nut. It's much easier with the socket, buy one, you will use it more than you think.
It's worth your time to get the socket. They should be availible on order from your local parts store. I've never liked the chisel method, as it chews up the nut.
Would the process be the same for a Ford 9"?
I need to replace my wheel studs, but just haven't got around to it. Knowing what would be needed before hand would be nice.
Any seals need to be changed on assembly?
Not tring to steal the thread, sorry.
Don't know what your calling a semifloat, but the 9 has a solid axle with the wheel bearing on the axle, so the drum just slips over the studs, the only thing holding it on is the lug nuts.
On a full floating axle, the wheel bearings carry the weight of the vehicle and the axles only purpose is to turn the wheels.
Semi-floating the axle carrys some weight and the wheel bearings also carry some weight.
A dana 60 is a full floating axle i believe, where as a 9" is a semi floating axle. I suppose a front axle like a dana 44 would be full floating because all the axle does is drive.
It could be a Dana 60 semi-floating rear axle. I don't know why they made them but they did. Just like EricJ said, pull off the wheel and the drum should slide off of the studs.
