Diesel Maint. comparison

Can someone tell me what additional and cost is for maint. on a diesel compared to a gasser.
Trying to get a idea between a gasser and a diesel.

I keep hearing that maint. is more for the diesel but the only thing that I know of right off the bat is oil changes.

Oil Changes diesel. I havent checked but heard it was around $60.00-65.00? but changing it at 7000 miles twice a year $130.00

Gasser changing between 3000 and 3500 that would be 4 times a year at around I just paid 25.95 for a LOF last week for my dodge 2500
25.95 x4 is $103.80

so what else is there? additional filters that need to be changed? and when? and how much?

Oil changes: I change mine every 5K (I consider my service severe.) Costs me about $80 with Mobil 1 Truck & SUV full synthetic, Motorcraft oil filter, and having the local Kwik Kar do the work (some people don't like the quick-lubes, but the local one treats firefighters nice and always takes care of things.) I was paying $40 for synthetic-blend Motorcraft in my Expedition.

Fuel filters: Fuel filter kits are more expensive and must be replaced promptly. Fuel filters are about $60 for real Motorcraft/Racor stuff. Buy the tool and do this yourself.

Air filters: The Powercore air filter for a diesel is about $80. The good news is that it'll last longer than a typical air filter unless you're operating in extremely dusty/severe conditions. I believe most people are getting 30K out of one air filter easily. My restriction gauge hasn't even moved, and I'm at 12K.

Fuel additives: Many people (myself included) have had great luck running a quality diesel additive for lubricity and cetane boost. Buying Power Service Diesel Kleen from ChinaMart, this costs me $2/tank.

There's other little stuff... draining the fuel/water separator, but you can do that yourself while changing the fuel filters. Etc.

And, of course, there's all the suspension upkeep and 4x4 upkeep, if applicable. But that's the same as on a gasser, provided you're used to heavy-duty trucks.

Fuel's more expensive, but you get better fuel economy.

Am I forgetting anything?

Overall, the diesel's more to keep up with, and the maintenance is a bit more costly. That said, I'd buy another PSD in a heartbeat. I love my truck.

Fuel Filters.. How often do you change those... and is there more than one?

Fuel's more expensive, but you get better fuel economy.
Yeah but does it end up being a wash in the end?

Fuel filter come in a pack of 2. There is one located on top of the engine, another on the frame under the drivers side. They are both in a canister and very easy to change. They are changed every 15,000 miles. I believe you can order the pack from different vendors on the internet for under $50. I have changed mine twice, you need a 24mm socket and 36mm socket to do so, no biggie.

Is it a wash??? I haven't really kept track, but too me it is not extremely expensive to keep up the maintenance. I do my own oil changes just using Rotella 15w40 and they don't seem unreasonable for me. I do not have extreme conditions, but I still change oil every 5,000 as tvsjr does.

I know a lot of people say the maintenance is more, but I really think they are not talking about preventive and regular maintenance, to me this is just not a huge amount out of the pocket.

Now, if you have over 100K miles on the truck or it is more than 5yr old, then you are out of warranty. If you lose an injector or 2 it could cost some bucks. That to me would be more money, but just routine maintenance, I really don't think it is significantly higher than a gasser.

I would have to disagree on the cost more then twice as much,as I have both a diesel and gas super duty. change both at 5k and it cost less then half for the gasser both trucks used in busines the gasser uses more gas when towing but gas is much cheaper. and as some one mentioned the diesel costs are high when there out of warranty one injector replaced is 800.00 .

I change my oil w/ the same frequency and the same product, but I drive about 40k/ year and tow a 8000lb+ toyhauler about 8 weekends/year. Costco has Rotella in bulk much cheaper than at Autozone. The air filter will last longer than people think.
I disagree on the ease of the frame rail fuel filter. The drive shaft is in the way, but there is a nice tutorial in the faq section that I will try tomorrow, I just hate getting diesel all over me, seems like it ruins whatever clothing it touches.
The price of the oil change and the fuel filters($50-70 for the filters) is a bit shocking, but I bought this truck because diesels are supposed to last forever and tow a mountain so since I knew I'd be towing some significant weight and I drive a ton, I wanted a truck that wouldn't go thru brakes every 10k miles(Chevy/GMC trucks 88-98), or go thru trannys every 75k miles ( Same GMs and all Dodges), and the motor would last forever (unlike the gas Dodges), so I got my 03 F-250 CC 6.0. I hope this gamble works out in the long run, cuz I'll be out of warranty around June.

I think that depends on the price of diesel and the life of the 6.0, the word from the people as I.H is the 6.0 will most likely be 200k engine,if that is true there is little difference I have got that from gassers with proper care. AS a example I just bought my wife a used lexus from one of my clients with 120k and it looks like it just rolled out of the show room and drives the same.

At current Fuel prices in South GA, Gas $1.85.9 and Diesel $2.23.9 it is a little cheaper to drive the Diesel.

1000 miles / 13 MPG = 76.923 Gals. X $1.85.9 = $143.00 Gas!
1000 miles / 16 MPG = 62.5 Gals. X $2.23.9 = 139.93 Diesel!

Over the last 10 years I have been driving Diesels, the cost of Diesel Fuel has been 20% less than gas, at least in South GA. My 01 paid for itself over a gasser in 4 years, just in fuel savings alone!!

As far as Maint. Excluding Fuel My 01 7.3 cost half of what any gasser I have ever had. 203,000 miles before I spent a penny to fix anything. The only thing that is left is oil. If you do it right the Diesel will cost less then the gasser even for oil changes!!
Or at least that is what I have exp!!

Assuming one had to buy 2 injectors at 800.00= 1600.00 the approx 4200.00 resale for the engine just went down to 2600.00. would it still be worth it?

I dont doubt that you get more for a diesel but, all things being, its just a depreciating piece of metal.

Lurker here because I have a buddy with a 6.0L...

If you do it right the Diesel will cost less then the gasser even for oil changes!!
Expound on this please. How can 15 quarts and a diesel oil filter cost less than 6 quarts and a Motorcraft FL-820S oil filter ($3.23) from ChinaMart?

Diesel is still 15 c per litre cheaper here in BC, I buy fuel and oil filters from international, far cheaper, I get ford to do the work, getting rid of 15 litres of oil is a pain. I change oil at 8000 Km, instead of every 5000 for the gasser, use 15 litres, not 5 litres. So really, it is close to but a bit more expensive to do maintenance on the diesel but it is generally going to last longer. Gasser has a 60 Km warrenty, the 6.0 has a 100k warrenty. I beleive the diesel is rated at 500k not 250k for life. Gasser, will get 250, maybe 350 well maintained.

As for the "what if" of changing an injector, pure speculation, but gassers require injectors, other repairs too, my old 2000 5.4 had to have both exhaust manifolds machined for warpage, 2200 bucks. Including extraction of a couple broken studs.

THERE is no rating for any engine as far as miles,it is not uncommon to get 300k out of the low reving 7.3 engine, but the navistar people say the 6.0 is roughly a 200k engine mostly because of fords programing, thats not to say it wont last longer. I have a friend who has a 7.3 with 380k engine never been opened, driven everyday. the cummins engine will get you more miles because of the inline 6.
