Squealing font end!!!

Help, I am in need of some answers. I threw the x into 4high and there is a squealing coming from either the front axle or transfer case. The noise will stop if the hubs are in auto and the switch is off. It will take a couple of minutes for the noise to stop completly. If the hubs are locked and the switch is off the noise is still there. If the switch is on the noise is always there. It sees that the noise is more prominent when there is a load +/- from the engine. With a hard acceleration the noise subsides for a moment. I hope that I can hear something soon otherwise I have to take it to the dealership here is Dallas in the morning (being that they are open with the ice) I live in College Station and I really need to get back tomorrow.

Any help at all would be great?

Thanks, Bryan

Is there gear oil in the front axle? Sounds to me like a lack a lubrication in the front diff.

Well, I had it checked at 100,000 and I only have 112,000 on it now. I hope that there is oil in it or I will be going after the dealer that did the work originally. I was thinking that or the transfer case myself. Now that I am sitting thinking about it the axle sounds a little more like it.

Could be that one of your front hub assemblies is going bad. It will squeal until the bearings start to disintegrate, then you'll hear a loud clicking and grinding noise. One of mine went this summer.

Well, it looks that the hub was bad and the dealership replaced it for me under some "Recall" notice. I only had to pay $88.00. I can't complaine about that!!!

Thanks, for all the ideas.

shadowdd, glad to hear that it didn't cost you an arm and a leg. Did you by chance get a number on that recall for the hub assembly? I had to pay full price. I wasn't told of a recall. My Excursion is a 2001 model with only 82,000 miles on it. I'd like to see if that year was included.

Thanks

RDRAY, sorry, I was shown the recall notice but I did not get a copy of it. I looked all over the invoice that I recieved but it was just for a deductible. Considering I have more than 112,000 miles I did not complain.

Yeh, I wouldn't complain either. My repair cost me over $435.00 just for the hub assembly, not including labor. You got off cheap. Some people are just lucky...
