My brother has an 88 F150 4x4 5.0 5 speed, and between shifts it will rev real high, and is the most annoying thing to deal with while driving it.So I put a new IAC valve,TPS sensor, cleaned the throttle body(blades open and close fine), and the inside of the intake(what I could reach), changed the PVC,checked for vacuum leaks, and it still does it!!So today for the heck of it I unplugged the IAC and it runs fine???Could they of gave me a faulty valve?Any other suggestions,of what could be wrong, its had new intake gaskets,Im gonna change out the thermostat when I get time,I am stumped on this one. Man, working on this thing reminds me why I sold my F250. Any help would be greatly appreciated,Thanks
if what your saying is true that you truck free revs inbetween shifts it is yourthrottle positioning sensorthat should take care of your problem i had the same problem
It has a new TPS sensor, and its non adjustable,I guess they came like that on this motor..It acts like its in cold start mode all the time, I wonder if it could be the thermostat or the coolant temp sensor??
When I unplugged the IAC it ran great, as soon as I plugged it back in,same problem. Now if im not mistaken the IAC opens the throttle a little bit to keep it running in colld start mode,so if the coolant temp sensor or thermostat is out,or stuck and the guage read's cold all the time,it could be stuck in cold start mode.
Try the temp sensor under the throttle body on the lower intake manifold. Mine actually broke internally and caused me some grief. If it is original, its probably on the out. If it is stuck in this mode this is the likely cause. Also, did you by chance run a code check?
If you unplugged the IAC and it ran fine then air is getting ingested somewhere. When you unplug the IAC the engine should slow down and eventually quit. If you haven't adjusted the throttle stop screw then check for all sources for a leak.<O</O
