E350 power loss

I have a 1988 E 350 with a 460 engine (motorhome) which started loosing power. I used to go up the hills at full speed, now I am on the truck lane with flashers on. On the flat it runs fine, just the hills that slow me down. I replaced all spark plugs, wiring, etc, no difference. A friend suggested that the catalytic converter is plugged up. Before I rip it out, is there a way to test for this? Any othere ideas? The car has only 45ooo miles on it.

The cat will do just what you describe. In the dealership we used to loosen the bolts holding the cat to the exhaust pipe and move the cat back a quarter inch or so. That will let the exhaust out ahead of the cat but make a lot of noise. I wouldn't drive it too much that way because of the heat you are letting out near the tranny and other things but a mile or two should be ok.
