I woldn't use gas any more, I figure that power servise and 911 have spend millions on research and development and I will trust their additives.
When I started trucking twenty something years ago most truck stops had gas pumps on the fuel islands for this purpose
My truck is jelled up right now so I guess I will have to change the filter and stick the space heater under it tomorrow!
It was -10 F here a few days ago and my old IDI started and ran great. I run plenty of additive, about twice as much as it says to use. A couple of Dodge owners I know didnt use anything and they were sitting on the side of the highway for a little while.
These older diesels have return lines that dump warm fuel back into the tank while its running.
How do you tell if you have a fuel heater on the filter? Mine is an 89 7.3 NA with the schrader valve.
I am not sure how to tell if it has a fuel heater or not.
I messed up by not putting any additive in until after it had sat in -0 for about five days.
I drove a semi over the road for 23 years and for the most part they jell or wax at the filter, I am pretty sure that is what mine did last week.
I put the space heater under it for about two hours and changed the filter and it rund great.
I kinda thought there was a wire on the top section of the filter assembly for the heater and the older engines had a fat fuel feed line up by the filter.
I see a few'o you recommend a little gas in the oil for a cheap anti-gel, interesting, any noticable help for cold starting? Or is it just that it lowers the gel point
I would never put gas in the oil but I have put gas in the fuel tanks, although I haven't done this for several years.
It seems like it should help with cold starts but I am afraid that it would damage the newer engines.
6 dollars will treat about 100 gallons with power service at recommended dosage.
I actually mix mine a bit stronger than that though.
One gallon of gas per full tank makes the gasoline more expensive than power service.
A good ratio for antigell is about 7%.
16 gallons of diesel *.07 = 1.12 gallons of gas.
Also the gasoline does not clean the fuel system or lube the IP and injectors.
The gasoline will also drop your engine power output.
Gasoline also makes working on the fuel system more dangerous as well as fueling. The return line does heat the tanks which causes lots of vapor to be present in the tanks at low temperatures.
