I just tried to change the spark plugs and wires in my '99 3.0L Flexible Fuel Ford Ranger. I have never done this before and apparently I made a terrible mistake. Like an idiot, I pulled all of the plug wires off at the same time instead of one by one. I put all 6 spark plugs in and put the wires back on in the same pattern as I took them off (or so I thought). But when I tried to start the truck, it starts really rough and then dies, so I assume I have the wires in the incorrect order. I know it makes a big difference as to what order the wires are in from the distributor cap to the spark plug, but does it also matter which exact wire I use at which point? For example, does the longest wire have to go in a certain place? If so, could someone PLEASE help me figure this out? Thanks for your time.
Did you get it figured out yet?
What length plug wire you use in what position doesn't matter but they do have to be in the right order.
On the passenger's side of the engine the wires go from the coil in the order it looks like they should be....the front one on the coil to #1 (front) spark plug, second one on the coil to the #2 cylinder, back one on the coil to the back plug...#3.
On the driver's side of the engine they are numbered 5,6,4 on the coil. That is the front one on the coil goes to #5 cylinder which is the middle one, the middle one on the coil goes to the back plug and the back one on the coil goes to the front plug.
Clear as mud?
