Here's a dumb question. I was doing a tune-up on my '69 F250. I changed the points, cap, rotor, and plugs. I want to change the wires, but it's got one of those Mallory Unilite boxes for a coil. (It's after-market, the Mallory box is mounted where the second battery used to be.) The wire goes down inside the box. (It's the wire that goes to the center of the cap.) It's the first tune-up I've done since I got the truck. The P.O. didn't change that wire either; the center wire is blue, the rest are black. I can change the plug wires, no problem, but I want to change that center cap wire as well. Does anyone know how to do this?
Ok, the "coil" wire you are referring to should come out of the Mallory coil. I think it's just a simple push in type plug. Once removed from the box, the end should come off and you can change the wire itself. Should not be anything special to it.
If you can't figure out on how to remove the wire, then a call to Mallory should solve the mystery. The one problem you might encounter is the length of wire you need to reach the coil on inner fender. The replacement you got with your spark plug wires might not be long enough? Something to check before getting in too deep.
If the wire looks okay, not cut/hurt/damaged in anyway then I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it. Replacing it would be nice, but don't hurt something trying. Contact Mallory first.
Possibly, buy a set of wires for an EFI 5.0 Mustang.
They fit perfect on the FE, and will include a long coil wire, as the EFI mustangs have the stock coil mounted on face of the strut tower.
You would want to check to ensure proper ends on the coil wire, as, the EFI mustang has 'male' terminals at the coil and dizzy.
