my wife has an 02 explorer automatic. Lately when putting the shift lever into park from drive it hangs up in reverse. If you let off of it just ever so slightly and then try again it goes right into park everytime. Once again the sequence would be from drive to park, hangs up in Reverse, let off just a little bit and then you can push it right into park. Almost seems like something is out of adjustment.
Thanks in advance for your help. Awsome site
homestead, mine just has over 36,000 miles on it also and the problem has just started. I cant believe that no one on this great forum has any thougts on this. I am not a mechanic by any means but I really feel that there must be some sort of adjustment that will take care of this problem. Like I said in my post when you are driving and then stop to put in park, it will hang up in reverse but all you have to do is just take the pressure off a little bit and then it will go right into park. Surely someone out here knows what the fix or maybe adjustment would be!
I had that same problem once... I think it is the "safety" interlock in the steering column that only allows shifting to / from Park when the Brake pedal is depressed. Mine finally burned out, shorting out the brake lights (it's fed off of the same circuity).. back when she blew out, the ONLY option for repair was to replace the friggin' steering column (600.00 install, talked 'em down to half when I pointed out the complaints that were mentioned during my regular service calls at the dealership, when it was under warranty). Totally ridiculous that they couldn't just replace the one part that was bad... I think they've changed their tune on that, and they can be replaced individually now, not 100% on that. Now that you mention it... it's starting to act a little stupid on mine now.
