Engine Cuts Out Under Heavy Load
In the last 6 months, this problem just started. Pulling my horse trailer (about 13000lbs) up a pretty good hill, the engine misses momentarily and there is also a scraping noise. This is usually around 45 mph/2400rpm. I have the auto transmission. Once I get back to 60mph in overdrive everything is fine. A friend has the same truck (F350 DRW) and the same problem. His truck is an 03 mine is an 04. My truck has 30000 miles on it. I want to get it to my dealer if this is something the warranty will cover. Anybody else have this happen?

Does this noise sound like it's coming from the serpentine belt area? Mine does it too, and a few have said it was the fan clutch. Just asked my tech and he said it shouldn't make that scraping sound. Now to find a hill that I can duplicate it for him.

same thing also, when pulling a steady 20 to 25 psi boost the boost guage would drop 5psi and jump back up. The noise i hear is excess boost blowing back thru turbo. It did this with a chip in it but havn't seen since removing. I hope my turbo isn't going out!!

solman, your also makes a scraping/grinding noise? Mine doesn't spew black smoke, and I also had an injector replaced on day 2 with no sound. I find it hard to believe a bad egr would make something cause this scraping/grinding noise. But I don't know squat, so....... It would make sense that by punching it the sound goes away if it is the egr.

Mine would also go away when it downshifted. It is really easy to unplug it and go drive it to see if that is what it is. If it is, then take it to the dealer and tell them. That will give them somewhere to start diagnosing it.

Hey guys, thanks for your help. I'm going to talk with the service manager where I bought it. I'm glad I have something to go on. If this is serious I want to get it taken care of otherwise I can live with it.

I just may have to do some heavy 4 wheelin and see if my EGR comes loose. 
Then see if I can replicate it. It also seems like we may have 2-3 different symptons, so this will be interesting.
