So I am looking at exhausts and the Magnaflow has come pretty highly recommended. It looks like Magnaflow has two basic design designs. One is in the type stainless material they use and the other is that one has a 3 1/2" down pipe off the turbo and one has a 4" down pipe.
If you look at the 15928 model on their website it's their "tuner" exhaust.
Does this make sense? Why would the narrower down pipe be considered the tuner setup?
"Turbo-Back Tuner: Recommended only if you are planning a chip upgrade, intake upgrade or turbo upgrade. Replaces the flattened OEM downpipe and steps up to 4" tubing and 3.5" downpipe, eliminating the OEM flange. Look for significant gains in all performance areas."
I can't answer why they name their systems what they do.
On a stock or near stock truck a 3.5" downpipe is a significant improvement over the stock 3" piece. As your power upgrades or towing loads increase, so does the need for a larger exhaust. Personally, I think the full 4" system is the way to go simply becase it's big enough to support almost any modification you care to perform on the engine and it does a significantly better job of controlling your EGT's (exhaust gas temperature) when towing.
Interesting. The reasoning I was told was that going to the larger 4" down pipe actually caused a reduction in low end torque even though you gained high end HP. Have you heard that before? Thanks for the feedback and welcome!
There is no reduction in torque. What happens is the torque peak moves to a higher RPM, so it feels a little more sluggish on the bottom end on a stockish truck.
Sorry I should have stated what I had done. So far I just have a TS Performance 6 position chip, AFE Stage 2 intake, leveling kit and a few other mods. Truck is a '03 crew cab 4x4 F-350 7.3L. Gauges and exhaust we my next move...and possibly a propane setup.

HOLY MAC.
I sure hope you have not been running on any of the high settings on the TS chip with the stock exhaust and an open intake. The TS chip that I had, the egts' would climb very fast even with a 4" turbo back exhaust. Get gauges 1st then the exhaust. After that, get an over-boost eliminator from ITP so you can actually use all that the program has to offer. Take it from someone that knows; do not run propane on a TS chip. You need a custom chip that has some of the timing taken out to account for the Propane. If not, get a video camera and stand back. You may win 10,000 dollars on AFV.

HAHA. Sorry guys...didn't mean do raise your blood pressure. I do have a dual guage setup on the A pillar with one being a EGT. You are right it does get up there. I have been cautious though. I only leave it on the very first setting with gain. I moved it up to the highest once and stomped on it...but just once to see what she would do. I have been very careful not to over do it until I get the exhaust in. Looks like I will do the 4" downpipe. Thanks for the advice around the propane and the over-boost elim setup. I will make sure I add that to my Christmas list. You guys rock. I'm glad I found this place!
