i got a 68 360 f100. I put a new distributor in it about a month ago. and i just changed the point 2 days ago. (its a single point) But recently when i drive around for about 30 minutes or so the engine chugs really hard when i accelerate. what could this be? i was thinking about doing a carb rebuild (when i take the air cleener off i can see gas under the carb sometimes (on the block). Oh yea its not the fuel filter its new and all tightened tight. Do any of you all know what the problem might be? Is it hard to rebuild a carb. its a 2bbl holley. Oh yea, i know the problem isnt the choke stuck open.

Please help. Thanks

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-Jan-02 AT 11:31 PM (EST)]If you're sure your points are gapped correctly you may want to check your timing. Every degree of dwell you are off throws your timing off a degree. Another thing I'd check is the little ground wire that grounds the breaker point plate in the distributor. When your vacuum advance kicks in, the plate moves, and if that wire is off or broken your ignition will "break up". You could also just pull the hose off the vacuum advance on the distributor to check it, and see if it makes any difference.

Edit: Forgot about the carb. Sounds like your accelerator pump is leaking, which is plenty enough to make it buck while accelerating! It's right there on the front on the driver's side, held on with four bolts. If the truck is running good and the carb looks clean you can replace the pump without even removing the carb from the truck. Those carbs are fairly easy to rebuild, but if it's just the pump you can get away with just that. Used to be able to buy the pump seperate from a whole carb kit, but the last time I went to get one I had to buy the whole kit.

Forgot ,Make sure the points cam is greased.
Fast way to wear out points is to leave it un-greased.

Take the distributor cap and rotor off. Look and see where the point set contacts the cam in the distributor. Bump the engine over until the points are open as far as they will go, when the little plastic block on the cam is sitting on one of the high points on the distributor cam. Take the feeler gauge and measure the opening (I think it is .018 as posted above). You'll see the point set has a slotted hole in them. Loosen the screws slightly and move the points until you get the feeler gauge to just pass through the contacts. Then tighten them down and recheck them.

You may also check that accelerator pump as well. Take the air cleaner off and open the throttle on the carb a couple times, it doesn't have to be running. If you are getting gas leaking from the accelerator pump it's gonna make it run bad as you first accelerate too.

Why aren't the points opening?
Well,
1)The mounting /adjustment screws could be loose.
This is my guess
2)The Compound part of the points that rubs against the cam is worn down from lack of lubrication
3)The distributor shaft isn't turning.

Without scanning 4 pages of instructions I have to send you to this site.
I hope you have Adobe acrobat for reading.
