Ok I have a 94 ford ranger. went out a few weeks ago to start it (temp was in the low teens) it would just turn over but wouldn't start like it was not getting gas. let it sit for a few seconds and tried to start it again same thing let is set a little longer and it fired right up, put dry gas in it. Was fine for a few weeks then it did it again last friday. went out this morning to start it, same thing but this time it wouldn't start. it has been cold every time this has happened. but it has been colder and it has started fine too. i just had it running yesterday so i could scrap the 1/8" of ice off the windows from the freezing rain we got. i let it run for about 20 mins. I have no idea what it could be. any one have any ideas??
The idle air controll may be sticking, try stepping on the throttle slightly when it happens. If it starts, remove it and clean it with throttle body cleaner. Should help if thats the problem.
Mine does the same thing. Also notice that sometimes it'll start then die, and sometimes I have to put my foot on the gas and rev it for a few seconds before it will really catch. Only when it's cold outside, although it seems to manifest at a warmer temperature this winter than last.
Only thing I have found that *might* help (I know when I have tried this, it started, but I don't know if it actually made any difference) is to turn the key on, wait for the fuel pump to cycle, turn the key off, turn it back on, wait for the pump to cycle again, and then start it up.
I'll be curious to hear what others have to say.
I assume yours cranks at a good speed (not a dead battery). Mine turns over decently fast, considering the temps.
I changed my fuel filter two weeks ago; didn't make any difference. It wouldn't hurt to do it, but it's a lousy job in cold weather. Can't wear gloves, and that gas is COLD. Can't really do it in a heated garage, either, for obvious reasons.
well my wife just got home and called me and said it fired right up. it is only like 4 degrees warmer now then it was this morning. i am still going to clean the idol air control.
well it did it agian this morning. i did not clean the IAC last night was too late when i finally got home. My batt is dead now killed it this morning but it was fine before yesterday. Where exactly is the IAC and what does it look like.
Well it fired up agian last night when i got home, figured it would. so i drove it to the gas station top off the tank bought some fuel injector cleaner and some iso-heet. just incase their was some water in the tank. got back home and got a call from freind. buddy of his was haveing the same problem, he had me check the air filter (this was what was wrong on his buddies truck). lets just say mine needs replaced badly, I left it in. Well this morning went out to start the truck. it was doing the same thing. so i primed the fuel system pressed the pedal down slightly and turned it over. after about 2-3 seconds of cranking she fired up. I am going to replace the air filter tonight.
well i took the air filter out, it was all clogged up didn;t feel like buying a new one, that didn't work. cleaned the IAC valve out and still no start. the thing is pissing me off. how can i tell if the spark is strong enough with a meter or whatever. i don't have the money to start replacing things in hope something works.
Well if your air filter is clogged it needs to be replaced, period. It's going to come back to bite you if you don't replace it, and it might have here. Don't run it without the filter in place for any extended period of time or leave your house/garage without it in place.
Your plugs are hard to remove. My suggestion is to remove one of them at a time and ground it to the block and see if you're getting spark.
well i thought water at first two but two bottles of dry-gas or isoheet whatever you want to call it and about 1/2 of fresh gas and still does it. I haven't driven it anywhere with out the filter other then down to the gas station 2 miles down the road. i will try to check the spark tom. if it is to windy or snowing out.
