Ford Escort

I normally post questions here for my 1982 F150, but I figured all of the good information I get here for my truck I could ask a question about my 1996 Ford Escort. My idle has been really rough lately and this morning my check engine light came on. To top it off whenever I slow down to stop the car dies and I have to restart. Where should I start? Could it be a sensor, vacuum hose etc..? I know this is the FTE website, but it is a Ford. let me know if there is a more suitable website or forum. Thanks

Have you covered all of your basic stuff yet? PCV, fuel filter, air filter, plugs, loose connections?

Start by pulling codes.

check for a vacuum leak first, then pull codes... easy to check for the vacuum line leak, especially if u don't have a code scanner

take it one of the bigger autoparts stores (checker, autozone, ect.),most of them will scan it and tell you what the codes are for free.

yeah definately take it to autozone...they always checked my light for free before i got my scanner. that will send you in the right direction...but im going to venture MAF pretty much does the smame as the IAC im not sure what your car has.

The IAC is in the throttle body( 1.9 engine)
Is engine the 1.8 or 1.9?

well according to what mr. ford 351w posted your car actually has both and no they arent the same thing...my bad... but check both because i had a really similar problem with my merucry mistake i mean mystique and it turned out to be a bad MAF sensor, made a huge difference in my car tho...good luck
