Contemplating the purchase of a set of the Edelbrock aluminum heads. The Cobra Jet ones. I wanted to go with the performer package, but for that they didn't list heads. So I figure I go with the Cobra Jet Heads, Performer manifold, and performer Cam. I'm also going to have a short block 390 built using the car pistons for the higher compresion. I don't want all out performance, but I do want a solid running motor with a good idle. Well mostly want to know about those heads, whose running them and what have your experiences been. I was going to ask my machinist if he could get similar flow out of a set of reworked cast ones. That would propbably be cheaper
not to be a pest or anything but edelbrock doesn't make any cobra jet heads, they do make Performer RPM heads though, and they are different from the CJ heads. I've heard that some need a valve cleanup, also, by the time you put in springs, the machining, stainless valves, porting, and everything you would need probably including the cost of a original set of big port heads. Well you are almost as high as the edelbrocks, plus you'll have the heavier iron heads still and the aluminum will allow cheaper gas
I agree with FE427, and their have been reports of the helicoils pulling out of the edel heads. Since you don't care about the weight on a truck, I'd stick with cast.
it's no real problem, I've seen people asking where they can get the edelbrock performer instead of performer RPM heads for the FE before so I just try to correct it when I see it changed to cut down on confusion later on, kinda like the message around the circle thing and how it can change
tongie,
freind has them on his mudrace truck.HE likes them.I may be wrong but they are stock alum heads???????Either way All FE's need a diet even though they run good.
Headin to your neck of the woods Sat morning, the guy with the Edel heads is suppose to go if things work right. Will be at Alvies at 9:30 or so after we drop off a car in Easton.
Later~
Hey if Alvies dosn't trip your trigger, then have your friend take yout to Christies Auto Salvage in Leavenworth. That place is full of vintage tin, and I mean vintage 30's and 40's stuff. I even found a Model T frame laying in the weeds! Lots of good F series stuff
We scored a rust free inner fender/core support for the 76 dually for 60 bucks. He even loaned us his torch to get the support bolts out. They were rounded off.
Also some trim and one door.He has all kinds of stuff.Every notice around that huge scrap pile? There is a Nash Metro upside down in there!!!
Yellow with the woodgrain sides???That was a 70 though.Hey there was something way down over that west? hill was that it?
Lotsa Fords(see were still on topic)alot of '73-79's.And that was what we went for.Well the guy with the Edel FE heads went for a radiator suppost for a '72.I told him that will be hard to find rust free in any yard around here.HE didn't.
I run the edel heads and have absolutely no problems with them. I seem to have one of few good sets from what I have been hearing. I have read somwhere that they use a new method of doing their valve job. The heilicoils have not given me any problems yet but I will be pulling my intake soon so we will see about a second torqing. According to flow numbers I have seen they outflow the CJ and the 427 medium riser heads even though the medium risers have bigger valves. They are cast most similar to the 427 medium risers.
