hello to all!!! this is my first post. take it easy!!! i just bought 2 85 f250 4x4's. one is complete, and stock w/5.oL, and and automatic. the other has no motor,4spd tranny, and it had no lift. but 38.5 swampers. the only reason i bought the trucks is to make one good mud racing truck. i basically know nothing about these trucks, i am doing all the work myself, welding/fabricating/etc.... any input would be helpfull, and the only definate ? i have is. what's with the front end? i've never seen one like it. it is like half straight axle, half ifs? what's the best way to lift? also it has a wierd motor in it, it is a 5.0, but it has the larger distributor, but it's carburated?. i thought the only carb'd 5.0's had the smaller dist? oh well, any info you guys know would be helpfull. performance, pointers, offroading, lifting etc... please help, thanks guys!!!!!
Jason

welcome to the boards. Looks like you got a good setup man. I'm not sure waht you're talking about with distributer size, but you have a solid place to start. I would be thinking of a stroker kit for the motor, a 347 makes the kinda torque you're gonna want. Next I would say think fuel injection. The hills can get steep, and carbs tend to puke out. Others like Monsterbaby know more on these subjects, so maybey they will get to ya. Good luck and happy motoring.
thanks alot man, i'm really only going to race it at one track here in fl, and ther's not much hills here anyway, but i was thinking about fuel inkection.the motor in it has an edelbrock carb already, i'm not sure what size thought. it needs rebuilt.
sounds like a good place to start. you got the twin traction beam suspension and axle. youd probly be better off upgrading to a solid axle, less parts to break.
i ditched the D50TTB (twin traction beam) for a D60 solid axle kingpin (thanks to kubota ). best mod i did by far! but if you race only in the mud and have few turns you should be ok. i have seen a couple D50TTB's at mud bogs with 40-44" boggers and they seemed to do fine. i would just hate for you sink a lot of cash into the D50 when you could find a D60 and directly bolt it in and never worry about breakage
you have a great start, although keep an eye on that t-case... i broke mine in the mud and it wasn't all that hard
I'm not sure when ford started using the larger dizzy cap, but you can easily convert the smaller capped dizzy to run the larger cap. I hear the larger caps help prevent crossfiring. I have converted to the larger dizzy cap in my 67 mustang and my wifes 79 Merc Capri.
what's the difference fbetween the big one and the little one? Is it just size?
The little one snaps right on to the dizzy. For the large one you need the adapter cap which is available at any auto parts store and the larger diameter dizzy cap, and the longer rotor. So yeah, the big one is just larger in diameter. I guess having the spark points farther apart helps prevent crossfiring. It also lets you run 8mm stock plug wires as opposed to the 7mm stock plug wires that go with the small dizzy cap. I know you can get custom plug wires larger than 7mm for the samll dizzy, but when looking up stock replacement wires for a motor with the small dizzy, all I found were 7mm replacements. I got tired of spending $50+ for 8mm accel wires.
First thing to do to the truck is hack them fenders back, take some cutting utensile and cut the body lines out (make new front inner fenders as well), that and a 6" lift and you will clear up to 44's from what i can tell (this is what i've down). However don't lift the truck till you've got a solid axle if you go this route, but if you want to save some cash a dana 50 ttb will save you money (i'm assuming this is what you currently have) and it'll hold up to 38's in the mud for more than what most would think.
For a motor, get rid of that 302 and go with a 351W, 400 (yeah i said it, and mine will be a minimum of 400hp ), or 460. For a stock motor the 4sp will be the best bet as a stock motor ain't going to have the power to shift an automatic from my experience. I would keep an eye out for a gear transfer case (np 205) as that 208 alunimun case will eventually (although not that bad, as the mud bogs aren't going to have the forces as the trails will) give up the ghost.
