There are extremes to everything that make no sense to build. I never endorsed the use of 1/4" wall tubing for a cage. There are numerous sizes and thicknesses of tubing discussed in this thread. For you to make a statement that a roll cage is an unnecessary weight that will just cause a rollover is assinine. Yes, someone could overbuild a roll cage just as easily as they could underbuild one. The point here is that a properly built rollcage can save lives. I've seen tough truck competors endo on several occasions. At one local event the cab was crushed (fullsize Chevy) and the driver suffered a broken neck. He was lucky he wasn't killed or paralized. A cage would have saved his neck. Are our trucks built well? You bet. Are they built to withstand a good rollover without crushing? Hell no. If you flop a 5K-7K pound truck on its lid without a proper cage or heavy rollbar you're screwed.
I realize that a rollover is probably not a concern for you. You aren't into heavy wheeling and your biggest concern is scraping your gas tank on the ground. Being that close to the ground has its pros and cons. One advantage is that you'll probably never roll. The downside there is that you will probably never roll because your vehicle doesn't have the ability to get itself into an off-camber situation in the first place. So long as you're driving a stock vehicle and not wheeling it hard I anticipate you'll have no trouble following your own well thought out advice to "keep the rubber side down at all times". For people here who have built the vehicles that they wheel, whether it be trails, mudbogs, mud drags, rock crawling, etc. they probably want to take precautions that will protect them should they get in a situation that could cause a rollover. I don't have all the answers out there and I certainly don't think my way is the only way to do things. I DO, however, think that someone who is so clueless about vehicle modifications that they don't even know how shocks operate in a 4x4 shouldn't post negatively about rollcages when they don't have the slightest clue what they're doing in the first place.
damn guys, chill the hell out! i see what Bdox is saying and is true to a point. some of you need to back away from the frwaking keyboard and take in a couple of big breathes!
what he was saying is that if you have this nice tall truck, lets say 49's for example and then go out and put in a way overkill cage, for examples sake solid bar stock, then you will have some serious rollover issues.
a moonbuggy thats sitting low to the ground is basically one giant rollcage and the reason they flip so much is not the weight or the COG, its just the insanity of these guys, lol.
Ivan, please go back a read what I said. I never said you should not have a roll cage or that they are a bad idea. I was just pointing out that some of the posts on this thread were going into overkill that would lead to excess weight aloft.
You know nothing about me or my history. You are right in that I am not into any heavy wheeling at this point in my life. But I was doing well in off road racing before you were ever born. I have been building cars and trucks since the fifties, everything from moonshiners' cars to multimillion dollar classics. Just because I am not interested in exactly what you are doing at the moment does not mean I am ignorant. So lighten up son. My Ford truck is a tool to take me to some interesting places that don't have any roads. That's what it's for and it does it just fine. It's not ever going to do the Rubicon.
Sweet grandpa, glad to hear that we're all on the same page then. And I applaud your stunning advice that would save us all from a rollover "Keep it rubber side down". I'm getting this embroidered on my visor. Thanks!
I'm still confused as to how a guy who raced offroad and build multi-million dollar classic cars didn't have a clue about the shocks on his own truck but whatever . . . what do I know? I'm just a dumb kid who doesn't know nothin' about offroad trucks.
That's OK Ivan, you can call me grandpa, your just a couple of years older than my grandson. But remember, because someone asks a question on a forum does not have to mean they don't have a clue.
I'm no Ford expert and I know there are a lot of guys on this site with more specific Ford product knowledge than I have. That is the main reason I signed up. The more questions you ask the more you are likely to learn. Even when you think you know the answer, asking questions can clarify matters and deepen your understanding of a subject. Be cool.
So long as you're driving a stock vehicle and not wheeling it hard
HEY!!!! I resemble that remark...not really but hey
Bdox, I wasn't intending to threaten (if you want a threat i'll give you one; just so we're clear) or be childish I was only stating that if you're were to continue your path you'd find a lot of resistance from other forum members who know Ivan on the personal level.
Ivan PUT THE KOOL-AID DOWN AND BACK AWAY FROM THE KEYBOARD j/k I do see where you're coming from.
Here's the problem. If Botox had just came in and said "hey, cages and over-engineering is great, but you should really consider the weight consequences and issues of COG if you go nuts with your wall thickness on your tube" he would be fine. THATS a very valid point. But no, he implies that if you just 'drive carefull' you can avoid rolling over and thus don't need a cage. What a joke. Shiznit happens and a cage is always good insurance. Then he goes on to slam Ivan who has the best "reputation" here on FTE out of literally hundreds of thousands of members. Ivan's earned that reputation with his wealth of knowledge and willingness to help folks. Botox continues calling members "kid" and "child" and elaborates on how he's been this great off-road racer since dirt was created (relative of snoman?). Great, another master "e-offroader" Quick research of his posts here quickly reveals that he really doesn't have much of a clue of what he's doing, and should not be giving out safety advice in here.
No, Botox has made the very short "list", end of story. As far as I'm concerned, he's done here, at least in the offroad forum.

Well, yea, I don't really think they are the same person, but they sound like friggin twins I figured snojob moved onto greener pastures where he could dazzle the less informed with his b.s. psuedo-tech without being called out by those who actually know what they're talking about.
