temp gage problems

I have an '01 ranger with the 2.3l 4. Temp gage does not budge from its resting position below the cool mark. I replaced the coolant temperature sensor, but to no avail. There's a thread that I posted to about two days ago about this. . . Someone told me that there's also a sending unit of some sort that could be also giving me trouble. Anyone heard of this and know where the sending unit is located? Also, could I have a thermostat that is stuck open? I've driven the truck 60 miles, and the gage still doesn't budge, so I'd think it would warm up sufficiently even if the T-stat was stuck open after an hour. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
JAred Bosch

There are two coolant temp senders, one if for the ECM and the other is for the gauge. If your thermostat is stuck open you will experience a lack of heat even with the heater on the highest setting.

*How many wires were on the connector of the sender you replaced? Please say it was just one .

It was two, and was called the coolant temperature sensor. It was located b/w the back of the engine and the cowl. Banged up my hands pretty good.

Also,

The heater works, but is kind of lukewarm. I'll have to compare it to another vehicle to see what's normal. We never really use them full blast down here in SE LA.

The temp gauge sending unit should have one wire, the temp sender for the ECM has two and has a watertight connection.

dang it. Guess I'll try to figure out where the gauge sending unit is and replace it.

Thanks,
Jared

You might also try testing the gauge to make sure it works. There is a procedure to do it, I don't have it at hand and don't want to lead you the wrong way. Try the tech thread perhaps?

I have the same prob with my 93 ranger. I bought a new sender for the temp gauge, but I can't find where the heck it goes... This on a 2.3L... Chilton's shows it as being in the lower intake manifold, but I don't see it. Is that the correct location, and do I need to do some disassembly to get to it?

There is some sensor or control in one the hoses running to the heater core. Does anyone know what that one is? It has two wires as I recalll...

The replacement sensor I bought only has a single terminal...

Sorry,

I don't know anything about the old 2.3l's. The ones starting in '01 are entirely different engines. Good luck.

I am experienceing the same problem. I can order the thermostat (anywhere from 80 to 150 dollars) but have no clue where it is on the new 2.3l engines. Any help would be appreciated

From your description it sounds like the thermostat needs to be replaced. The entire housing/stat/sensor is sold only as one unit for the newer 2.3 Duratech. It is located on drivers side near front of engine. Get out the flashlight and look for the hoses going to it. It's easy to overlook.
