was wonderign what u would recomend 4 a 400 cam. want a real rough idle, and lots of torque. use the truck for truck pulls driving, nug bogs, and pulling a 2 car trlr. im rebuilding it. i knwo it used 2 have an rv cam in it but dont knwo nothing about it. i have headers dual exhaust a holley torker intake a 650 edelbrock carb. any help is appreciated. the motor was supposed 2 be .60 over but not sure.anyone knwo a cheap way to tell?
There's no "cheap" way to tell the overbore. You're gonna have to pull the heads and look at the top of the pistons and/or measure the bore.
There are a lot of cams out there, generally the ones with a lot of lope in the idle are the larger lift, long duration cams. There's been a lot of discussions about what cam works best on this forum over the years. Try searching for the info in the forum and I'm sure you'll get some good ideas.
the pistons might have 060 stamped on the top- mine did- so how about one of those fancy camera things they can scope with...- maybe a local shop has one? I'd start looking for a donor block. Also make sure you go with flattop pistons TMyer gets em and badger is about to make some from what I hear.
Also research some builds on this site- tons of great- free info.
I second the stamp on the top of the piston head, most pistons are usually stamped on top for example mine says 30 so my engine is bored 30 over. As far as the cam goes there are so many good ones out there, summit is always a good choice if you're looking for a budget cam, I run a crane cam .51/.51 and my 400 purrs, the biggest I would go would be a .52/.54
