We have a 99 expedition with 165K on the odo. Once a year or so since 100K ive changed the trans fluid by draining it from the pan and refilling. Ive never changed the fluid in the torque converter.
Unfortunatly, I didnt measure how much came out, and dont remember exaclty how much i used to put in. I belive it was around 6 quarts, but my haynes manual syas start at 4 and add some. ive put almst 6 in there already and I think I can just barely see it on the end of the dipstick, not sure since its a PITA to read.....
Does anyone know how much comes out of the oilpan alone? and any tips on reading that stupid stick? sometimes one edge comes out coated, other times its bone dry......
4.5? how is it that ive put 6 quarts in there and its not all over the stick? it *did* sit for a couple of weeks before i changed the fluid, is it possible that more "leaked" down into the pan from the trans' guts?
one thing im sure of is that there was certainly more than 4 quarts of fluid that came out. when i collected it it filled one gallon container, and partly filled another.
well in that case the t/c must have let fluid drain back to the pan. continue to add until it reads full on the cold line. have you done the t-case? it is possible for the seal to go out and the tranny fluid to flow into the t case.
