no fuel need help

well the weather today is about 10 degrees. i went out to start my 95 and got it going, running real rough) figured its cold. about five minutes later it still running on only a few cyclinders. now i am late for my daughters performance and have to take my 70 merc cyclone out in the snow. (big block and 4 gear and Detroit locker) that was fun, not. any how i stopped and picked up a new fuel filter and glow plugs. install the f.f. and hit it wont start. pull the top of the fuel filter of and i am not getting any fuel to the filter. no blown fuses i see and not sure where the fuel pump relay is. The trucks in the heated garage now figured maybe there is water in the fuel line, but I am still not getting anything. what gives?????now the cyclone has 6 inches of snow on it and I have a dead truck.

try getting some powerservice 911 in there sounds like the fuel gelled up in the lines. its mechanical fuel system the pump is on the top of the motor in the valley. put the powerservice in the fuel bowl and the tank.

As barebackjake said fill the fuel canister with Powerservice DieselKleen or Stanadyne. Because it's a mechcanical fuel pump, if you drained the canister when you replaced the fuel filter and do not mannually fill the canister with diesel fuel or DieselKleen, it can take a lot of cranking to re-fill the canister.

i did fill the canister with fuel afterwards.after sitting the warm garage and being plugged in i was able to fire it up. then i did make sure i am getting fuel, wich i was. now i think my batteries are junk and its not a fuel problem. the truck starts and runs well for about 30 sec then starts running real bad. i have charged the batteries and check them i only have 12.3 volts per battery.the batteries were bought from that useless walmart exactly 13 months ago. this aft i will take themout and have checkedat a local parts store. my ampmeter goes up and down with engine speed once it is running correct me if i am wrong but that would tell me its working good( the altenator)i will keep every one posted. do you have any ideas why low batteries would keep it from running well once it has been started?jack k

i should add that i did take my regulator apart (what a pain) and it was spotless inside. after 114K you would think it would be full. i guess only buying fuel from quality fuel stations that sell alot of fuel is well worth it

Being mechanical fuel pump it will run just fine. But if you run very low on battery or charging. The fuel shutoff will slam shut and you will have no fuel. If you need batteries get a 1000cca with a 60 month warranty. if they fit into the battery area.
this time of year get a good grade of fuel from a major supplier. I have used premium and 5% bio and have never had a problem.

What do you have for fuep pressure, we still haven't ruled out the fuel pump it might just be able to pump, but supply enough fuel.

there is no electric fuel cutoff on theese trucks when the battery power gets low its not able to fire the injectors and control the injection pressure thats the problem with weak batteries. when the truck is cold and the glow plugs and fuel heater are on the voltmeter will fluctuate when you bring the rpms up and down due to the alternator producing more power. it dosnt produce its full potential untill 1800rpms. the lower the rpms the less power its producing giving more of the load to the batteries. there have been quite a few people that have had issues with the walmart batteries so i would go down that route.

you can check fuel pressure on the shrader valve on the side of the bowl with a regular tire pressure gague that goes to 100psi.

did you let it idle and it was still running like crap or did you drive it? it needs to be driven to get it to heat up enough to get all the cylinders combusting. have you checked your gp's?

go drive it for a while and go easy on it. see if it gets better. or plug in your block heater for an hour or so. then start it and see how it is......
