While I was repalcing the brake hoses today, it looks like I need new ball joints (86 150 2WD). I have the shop manuals, and read up on it. The shop manual looks like its not so bad as usual. How big of a job is this in the real world? I figure a full weekend, I hope. What are the problems to look out for. I figure getting the nuts loose and ball joints out will be a bear, do you guys use heat, press them out? Also what about the front end alignment after wards? Any suggestions are GREATLY needed!!!
Heat if you want, but a Ball joint removing tool is all you'll need. I was able to rent one from our local Auto Zone (Or was it Advance?) for $100.00 deposit and got that back when I reurned it.
Make sure you have the snap ring off the joint and use a big cheater bar. On mine I had to remove the top joint first before the bottom would come off because of how the tool is made.
It'll sure help if you have an air wrench to put it back together because when you go to tighen the nut up the joint will spin with it.
