i am in the process of getting up parts for my offroad/worktruck but dont know if i want a automatic or a manuel transmission. the automatic is better up town but it seems that the manuel is better offroad. wich would yall perfer?
If you are going to be stuck in crush hour traffic every day, then an automatic all the way. Or if you ever plan on selling it, an automatic is the only way to go. Other then that, I prefer a standard transmission off-road in my trucks.
I rather easily replace a burnt clutch (has not happen yet) then a $800 (C6) - $1200 automatic transmission that I have to buy from someone else. Even with a burnt clutch you can drive it home and you can never be stuck with a "dead" battery or "dead" starter driving a standard as long as you can find an incline to roll down or someone to pull you.
About the worse thing that can happen with an automatic is have it fail miles off road in the middle of the woods. It is a horrible stuck. Better have a good winch.
I have NEVER had a automatic fail and leave me stranded in over 35 years. If your 4x4 is properly geared and your automatic has a properly sized and installed aux cooler, you will be replacing clutchs in a stick longer before a automatic needs service. Typicalls every one that has automatic problems in 4x4 have one or both thing wrong. They either have too tall a gears for tire size and usage or do not have a proper cooler. Automatic take a beating and fail with big tires and stock gears and it is often blamed on cheap tranny and never the fact that it has not been properly regeared and cooled. Big tires and stock gears put a LOT of strain on the tranny or clutch.
