One tool not mentioned yet is a digital camera and a computer to store the images on. It is not a toy - although it is fun to upload pictures of your progress.

Safety gear. Face sheild, ear plugs or muffs and dust mask. Paint/rust removal and weld grinding are noisy, dusty, and have lots of stuff flying around. Develop good habits and use it every time. Leather welding gloves and a welding hat under your welding helmet are a good idea, also.
