Mercedes?...or wait?

I was making a lot of bio-diesel for a while but wanted something to run it in, now I'm looking at a 1984 300D turbo with 140K for $4K...what's your two cents worth? I'm also thinking about waiting for a ford or dodge (pre-'93) with 4wd and a man. trans....just was told by a friend who's had mercedes and he said good car until it needs a part; then lookout bank account!

I'd say to go for it. Mercedes never really made a bad car. There are some that are more desireable than others but overall they're good. That advice on the parts is spot on, however you can get any part from the dealership if need be. Case in point, the owner of the shop where I work has a 1959 Mercedes Benz 220 that has been fully restored to original. 90% of the parts that he needed (which were a lot) he was able to order from Stuttgart through the local Mercedes dealer. I think Mercedes is one of the few manufacturers around that has a parts program like that. Before you buy though check carefully and fully for rust, and you may want to have the engine oil sampled and analyzed by a lab.

I have owned 2 mercedes now and I have a 93' 300D, some parts are expensive like the AC but others are cheep for that model. go to www.mercedesshop.com and look around. Make ssure the AC works, if it dont I would pass it by, complete AC repair can cost up to $2500 at the dealer.

Give the underbody a hard look before you buy it.

If it's rusted out, stear clear.

What a piece...some people think what they have is so great...anyways the list of things wrong is extensive, starting with a gutted trunk with a box containing most of the interior trim, only the speedo worked, one window didn't, peeling paint all over, broken hood springs so you had to hold the hood up, two broken tail lights...lol...and the guy on the phone said it was in such great condition it didn't even look a year old...said it was perfect garage kept....right.

Oh yeah the ac didn't work neither did the fan...lol...but the sun roof did.

I can't think of a better...or worse used car than a Mercedes Diesel. A nice one, properly maintained, could outlive the owner. A bad one could bankrupt him before it's over.

Well I think you have answered the question for yourself - as PB said, a 300D is a very good car if looked after.
