I have a 77 f250 4x4 with a 351 4 speed runs good and starts good on a cold start up but when it is run for a while and shut off warm and you try to resart while its still warm it is like it is locked up,but if you let it cool for a while it starts right up. Do you guys have any Ideas on how to fix this. Its my snow plow truck and I just worried I stall it sometime and not be able to move it out of the way cause of not starting. You can pull it to get it started when its warm but starter wont ingage it acts like a dead battery.
When the starter brushes or windings develop resistance, that resistance increases exponentially when the unit gets warm. Let it cool, that resistance comes down to where it'll crank right over again.
Did you check the battery cables and the cable going to the starter?
yeah, i just had the starter go out on mine yesterday, have to put the new one in today sometime, but it seems like my truck just eats starters though.
Make sure your ignition timing is set correctly. Also make sure the ground connections between the engine block and the battery are clean and tight. Also make sure the + battery terminals are clean between the battery, starter solenoid, and starter are clean and tight. If those are all OK, replace your starter motor.
The Duraspark ignition system has a circuit that retards timing for easier starts. If you have an aftermarket ignition system or the Duraspark unit is wired incorrectly it is harder on starters especially when the engine is warm.
