brake lights

hey guys, my problem is this. My brake lights dont work. I have an 86 150 xlt lariat. my rear turn signals and running lights work just fine. However my brake lights on both sides do not, we tested to see if the wires were getting a current where the bulb goes in and they were not. Also I would like to add that there is a small piece that is connected to brake pedal up under the dash that has a green wire coming out of it, this piece is a clip so i unclipped it and had a look. It looks like there was a yellowish wire coming out of it as well but got cut off. There is a wire the same color that is clearly broken off of somewhere but when i connect it to the clip the brake lights still dont work. thanks in advance.

Is the clip your're talking about, that's under the dash, connected to the brake pedal switch?

I Wonder why that wire was cut.

Could be the switch. Could be a blown fuse.

Did you check the fuse to see if it was good?

The wire running to the back of the truck that carries current for the turn signal light is the same wire for the brake light. So, it is not a problem in the back of the truck. The problem is definately under the dash. Buy a Chilton or Motor repair manual for your truck, but ensure that it has wiring diagrams. Or, sign up for www.alldatadiy.com. It is $15 a year and has tons of information on your specific truck. Invaluable if you are repairing or trouble shooting electrical and engine problems.

it has an alarm in it. the last owner was a tool and wired the alarm so the brake lights would go off as the alarm sounded. however he didnt hook the brake lights back up lol. so this was very useful....

You never mentioned the alarm thing.

So, it was probably a simple fix for the shop.

I wonder if they reattached the cut wire.

At least you got it fixed. That's cool.
