In my opinion, with over 30 years of hunting experience, I would say in the great majority of cases it is not acceptable to attempt a shot at an animal for most hunters at greater than 300 yards.
Unless a hunter has practiced at that range with regularity under the conditions in which the shot will be taken, I believe the risk in wounding and then never finding the animal is too great and inhumane. Seriously, how long would it take most hunters to cover that distance to follow a wounded animal? Once you get close to that area, most people can't even find the location where the animal was when they took the shot, let alone where it ran off to and which direction it turned after it went out of sight. Do you want that on your conscience? I don't.
Also, I have found that most hunters and shooters I have spoken with really don't realize how far that distance is and how many factors affect the bullet on the way to the target.

I do a lot of deer hunting around here, limitless doe tags... with my Ruger M77MKII in .25-06. Its an awesome gun, too light for elk unless you have a heavy load 120 grain Nosler Partition.

IMO a Browning A-Bolt if you can pay that much I have one in 7mm magnum very smooth and accurate. But for my first very own rifle at a reasonable price I would get a Remington 700 BDL in a 308 they are smoother and nicer than the other remingtons
once again IMO.

Huh? *laf* I know guys who hunt everything Montana has with 220 Swifts, just heavy (for that cal) rounds on Elk-size game. Yeah, Elk with a 22 cal. They're excellent hunters and marksmen however, that sort of shooting is not for evryone.

Wow. So a .243 would be 'too small' as well, yet a .357 is ok? Would the 25-06 with a 140 grain bullet carrying more energy than a 30-30 also be 'too small'?

Guns cause senseless deaths.
like
Pens and keyboards cause senseless misspelling, flawed logic, and general horrible carnage upon language.

PS - hey Matts72 - I lived out of Bozeman for about 17 years, hunted antelope north of you out of Roundup, Forsyth, etc. 'gotta love those unlimited doe tags and the otc elk tag for every Montana resident!

He shoots then at 900 yards he knows his gun he put it together him self( He is A gun smith on the side) He knows his shells load then him self he has an awesome scope He practises hot cold rainy snowy any kind of weather and he kills then in one hit.

Also if you miss A deer at the distance they usually don't run Becca's they don't know where the shot is coming from.

I stated a wounded animal is almost impossible to find after shooting at that distance. A hunter can and should make every attempt to close the distance and get the closest shot possible to, hopefully, ensure a one-shot kill and also to ensure he/she can get to the animal reasonably quickly. The problem with the majority of hunters taking a shot at that distance is that most don't have the skills to make proper shot placement and most rifle cartridges do not have sufficient energy left to properly penetrate and expand inside the animal.
BTW, how is it that 900 yards is the specific distance? Curious.

Well as I stated before to does have the skill and knows what he is shooting.

What do you mean? It could be any distance he has A range finder so he takes A range on the Deer sets his scope and fires the shot goes over guts it out gets the truck hauls it back to the ranch and skins it out.

as a deer hunter myself. I never take a shot over 300yrd. I rather it die quickly so i dont haft to walk seo far to get it.

My hunting saftey instructor.(hes with the fishry and wildlife deparmtne) he went out and got a dear at about 600 yards with a 7mm i believe. He said he would never try that shot again.. He followed the blood trail for a mile or so. And we got upon the dear it was still flopping around.

So the question is. how far do you wanna walk? of course you can hit it at that range. Will it die withing a couple hundred feet..no
by the time you hit a 800+ it looses so much velocity. that it would be as affective as shooting a deer with cbs at 50 yards...(basically a pellet (bb gun) shot from a .22 with a small charge.)

.338 ultra mag...1400m...in new zealand; elk. video and the guides word; one shot it droped in the video...my friend is the safari club internationals regional chairperson or other and hosts guides when they come to our area on vacation, this is his guide in new zealand, who also owns a home in spain and here in san diego...anyways it can and does happen, but not by the novice.

by the way we just got back and shot 6 hogs this evening...starting at 150 yrds, my first shot- out to 310 on the last shot for me; my friend also shot three, two past 300, i was using my 7mm-08 w/140g game kings and he was using a 300wsm- all handloads...we each fired four shots, and we each had one complete miss...all with runnig pigs...so i ruined my record.
