hey ford fan!!! just wondering about oil levels in between changes. been towing toys the last couple of months, and was due for a change. it was above the add line, down about 1.5 quarts. is this normal? how much do you folks add between changers. thanks for your time.
I rarely add any oil but I notice that after 5000 miles that it is down around the add mark. Towing or not. I see no reason to add any as long as it is above the add mark. I see many large cat engines that have to run at the add mark or the crankcase will blow it out anyway.
Different trucks, different levels on the dipstick. Mine doesn't use any over 5000 miles but others use a quart or more between changes. If it is using a quart and a half I think I'd fill it back up. If it just used a half a quart or so and then stopped, I'd run it that much low all the time.

Like JOE-M said - each truck is a little different - but it is not abnormal to be a little low when it's time for an oil change. My truck is usually about a quart low when it's time to change the oil - if I do a lot of hard driving, or towing - it will use a little more. It's completely normal for a turbo diesel to use some oil.
well you can tell were i came from by my name. that was a 99 250 too, and it used no oil at all. so when i seen it was down, i thought i would drop a line to my fte friends and get to the bottom of it. new to 7.3 but learning every day! thanks a lot friends.
What I have heard or read is, that if the oil gets too low you will start losing pressure at the HPOP, which will effect you fuel injection. If I were down below the add line, I would at least add for comfort level. I don't drive my PSD more than 6000 miles per year and I use synthetic oil. So my changes are once a year whether I need it or not.
