I have an 88 Econoline Clubwagon with 351W EFI and auto trans. It sounds like it is revved up high (high RPMs) through all of the gears. It seems to be shifting gears fine, so I don't think that it is the transmission. Maybe, it is just something that makes it sound louder.? What do you think could be causing this. What should I check?
It seemsto idle normal. Its just when driving, it sounds like it is revved high like it isn't switching gears. But I can feel the gears shift, so it isn't that.
If sounds like your torque converter (clutch) is slipping. So I did a search for you using (+torque +converter +fail) in the tranny section.
Eventually if/when the converter fails it will just rev up high and go nowhere. I would check your tranny fluid to make sure it is full and if it is I would try changing it to see if it helped in the short term. The best thing might be to pull the converter now before it damaged the tranny.
To get a better understanding, try these posts. Pay attention to the excellent post by fordboypete in the first one:
In a van it is pretty easy compared to other vehicles because of frame height and nothing in the way. You do have to remove the transmission. Then basically just unbolt the converter from the flex plate.
we always removed the TC and trans as one unit. This save stress on the front seal and bearing in the transmission. There are three bolts that hold the TC to the flexplate (flywheel), have a buddy rotate the engine with a large breaker bar to get them all.
It has been shifting smoothly, so I'm thinking that it may not be the torque converter. I checked he fan clutch and I think that may be the problem after all. It turns by hand but it takes a lot more effort compared to the fan on my F150. So I am hoping that the fan clutch is the problem and not the TC. Thanks, rclarke, I would have never thought of checking the fan clutch and thanks to everyone else for the help.
