id say get a dell. i have a dell work laptop and a gateway personal laptop. dell has awesome warrenties. i've talked to several people that have broken their laptop (i.e. dropped a 5 lb. history of civilization book and bent their hardrive) and dell sent them a free replacement with no questions asked. DUDE GET A DELL!
Thanks for asking, 150ford, it's been great! While everybody else seems to think "bigger is better," I love the portability of this Compaq (very thin and lightweight). The screen is plenty big enough for my needs, and I don't feel like I'm dragging a Kenmore side-by-side refrigerator around with me. The laser mouse works great, the plug-in keypad is a HUGE help when working on the club budget, and the wireless at home just freaks me out. I'm surfing the net, BUT THERE'S NO CABLE! Freakin' amazing...
You know they say you can be anyone anywhere you want to be while your on the internet. At that paticular moment I wanted to be on a exit ramp.
Last week I was on a greyhound bus typing messages somewhere between Nashville & Memphis.
Tonight I'm just west of Birmingham typing this message, driving a big rig, smoking a cigarette, reading the online herald, and putting on my make-up all at 75 mph.
Aren't I multi-talented?

I have to agree with getting a HP. It's got a pad that's easy to use. I've always hated that pencil eraser thing, too, and not having one was the main feature I looked for. I've got a wireless mouse, but I rarely use it. I take out in the backyard or sit in the recliner. At the motels I can sit on the bed, but I found I hung out down at the continental breakfast area at night - close to the printer and the fax.
I've got a DVD in mine, but I've only used it once. I do regret not getting one with a DVD recorder though.
I think the next big computer purchase will be another laptop. I'll just have the desk at home set up with printer, moniter and keyboard to plug whichever laptop I'l need.
I have a backpack type case with a few goodies:
A cable for my GPS. I can go to any city or in the middle of nowhere and find my way. All I need is an address or lat/long and I can get there. It's helpful sometime, just to see where I'm at. I have topo software for checking out profile and elevation type stuff.
Bluetooth. I use it when there's a blutooth printer available, plus my Palm has bluetooth, so I can update and download Excell, Word, contacts, etc - without pulling cables out. (Bluetooth phone is next. Click a contact and it dials.)
Wireless internet card. This is kind of self explanatory. I bought a laptop without one built in. I wanted to save money and knew I would probably have to update anyway. Most of the motels have access anymore and there's lots of places with WiFi access free, (I've checked FTE from Seattle to Halifax.)
Wireless mouse - wires suck.
USB TV adaptor. Handy toy - Bad TV in an odd spot at the motel, no problem. Plus, I run a UV CCTV camera off it or can patch into a security camera system. (Yes, I carry the cam and cable. I wrap my tinfoil hat around it for travel.)
A spare cable for my camera. This is really usefull. You have a meeting or event, whatever, you can take pics and pull them up on the laptop for everyone to see. Then burn them on CD or memory stick for whoever wants. Lots of people carry memory sticks now and it's a lot better than emailing a low resolution pic or spending your own time at home, burning CDs and mailing.
A 3.5" USB floppy drive. For the technically challenged crowd that still uses that format.
Mic and headphones, network and phone cable. you know, all the normal stuff.
