Name that sound!

Have a very strange sound in my 89 Aero XL 3.0L 2wd (A/C)

When she idles, it kinda sounds like when you rub two ballons together. I was thinking the belt, or water pump. The belt isn't squealing, voltage is not dropping. Temp is way down just off of cold. (Bought a new thermostat, need to put in.)
Any suggestions?

I went and purchased a serp belt, thermostat, and antifreeze.

Any quick tips for replacing the Thermostat? I haven't worked on this Van before, just got it. No manual yet either.
I am very good at working on my 85 BII. Shouldn't be too much different, I hope.

It is not difficult. Only 2 bolts to unscrew, one gascket to install... Nothing to disassembly, just open a hood... Just position thermostat correctly. After that fill the cooliong system and run the engine on 2000 rpm for 3-5 min. with open radiator cap to remove air from heater core... That's all.

check the water pump bearing by spinning-feeling for any bearing roughness and shaft movement and look for any leaks or seeps on bottom-any water rust staining-replace before it fails and takes out your engine heads or sends fan thru radiator....also check the idler pulley while belt off for worn failing noisy bearing.

my 2 cents are on failing alternator bearings, spin the alternator pulley to check the smoothness of bearings and any shaft movement

somtimes the viscous fan clutch will wear and make noise, spin, should be quiet, smooth and some resistance

reverse flush the block and radiator with garden hose at full pressure while you have the thermostat out..pull off lower hose from radiator or w. pump and blow out with hose...messy but gets the crud out
put in a 1/4 cup of liquid dish soap in radiator, bring up to temp in driveway and do the dirty work. really cleans out the block and radiator
nice and clean, ready for new antifreeze

Thank you for the reply!!
I am betting on the idler pully myself. I tried using the "Doppler Effect" to locate the noise. (Yeah, I cupped my ears...looked dorkey too...LOL)
Sounded like it was coming from the idler.

Funny thing is, if you raise the rpm just a little, the noise goes away. It's fairly loud when it does it.
