351c to 400?

Gday Guys
Please be kind to a new F100 owner
I have a 79 2wd 351C,C6,9 inch.
Is it possible to convert the 351C to a 400 with pistons and crank or is this only the 351M?
I am I Australia so it would seem I have the good heads. I am running extractors (headers) into mufflers about the size of a small lunchbox with a twin 2 1/2" exhaust that exits in front of the rear wheels (I do have to turn the radio up a bit) It also runs a 650 Holley carb on the stock manifold. The fact that I cannot get it to idle smoothly makes me suspect the cam may not be factory either.
The mileage on the speedo is 360,000 Km (225,000 miles) but I don't know if this is what the motor has done. However it is using oil at a rate greater than I am happy with so, I am looking for information on a good rebuild.
I am chasing torque from low down in a flat line to redline rather than all out horsepower (pick the older user that wants somthing usable rather than bragging rights at the dyno) hence the longer stroke

Any information would be greatfully received

Mike

Mike,

Believe the realistic limit of the Cleveland is around 392 inches. Also, it seems the best configuration for a Cleve is 377 inches.

Windsors are now available (small block) to 460 inches, so this might be an option. Also, the Ford Racing Crate 460s are less stressed (longevity factor) if a big lump. (wts. aren't that different comparing BBF w/ alum heads and accessories vs. iron smallblock.)

Can't address the M issues.

(Panteras are cleveland powered)

good luck.

A 351C has a 9.2" deck height. A 351M/400 has a 10.297" deck height. The 351M/400 also have larger mains, so the crank will not fit.

Theoretically it's probably possible to modify a 400 crank to fit a Cleveland but frankly I think you'd be better off getting a custom kit. Due to the shorter deck height you wouldn't be able to use stock 351C pistons. There are several companies out there that sell 4.0" stroke cranks for the 351C which will net you 408 cid. There's even a 426 cid kit with a 4.170" stroke crank.

Thanks guys
I suspected that it wasn't as easy as a crank and pistons as I hadn't heard of it being a common conversion over here.
