exhaust

I was going to completely redo the exhaust on my 79 351m but i need to get it on the road by next monday and i dont have the funds for hooker headers and a complete dynomax system. I was just doing to buy a $20 mufler and put it on like 10 inches after the y pipe. Will that be quiet enough to pas a new your state inspection or do i need to add more pipeing? thanks
Dan

most states require that the exhaust exit past the end of the cab (out the back for broncos)

Better to run the pipe(s) out the side either just in front or just behind the rear wheels. (Federal and most state laws require that the exhaust exit "aft of the aftmost opening window"... in other words behind the side windows in the vehicle that roll down). The original exhaust exits behind the rear wheels but off to the side to keep exhaust fumes from being drawn back into the cabin because the tailgate is not air tight and fumes can be drawn up through the drain holes and through the open window when it is down.

Its your decision but the idea of passing out at the wheel in the middle of the highway from carbon monoxide poisoning has never sounded like much fun to me.
