Hi, lately my truck seems harder to start than the years before in winter. All glow plugs are working but I am not sure if the fast iddle kicks in. I do not see much difference. Iddles is at around 700. The engine sound is noisyer, clapping heavier for the first few miles wich is normal, than it smooths up and runs like a cat.
What is suppose to be the RPM at start up and what makes it sound heavier for the first few miles?
The noise is the timing advance sol energized.Fast idle should be around 800-1000rpm,warm idle around 650rpm.Unplug the fast idle sol and run a jumper to it to see if it works,or on a cold engine turn on the key and unplug the sol,you should hear a click and see the plunger move. Both the timing advance and the fast idle get there power from the same sensor.
Thank pnose. I understand also that "advance" means fuel timing advance. Now I get it, the fuel gets in in "advance", so it will rattle heavier.
I read on other post that if you disconnect the advance timimg, it will be easier to starts when cold? I found something very very interestingsting because these where suppose to help cold starting? Someone says it will have white smoke if you disconnect the advance but it will starts much easier. If this works I will certainly try it.
Did you ever tried disconnecting below 0 F?
Youre right,it is there to aid in cold starts.Fuel timing advance is the same as engine timing advance, thats why you get the rattle. If you drive it before it kicks off its most noticable right before it shifts gears.I would leave it connected and check out the fast idle sol,as the fis also aids in warm up so both sols can kick off when the coolant hits 112f giving it a,quieter, cleaner burn.
Also, the fast idle will only work if you mash the go-peddle with the key on prior to starting the engine (like, while you are waiting for the glow-plugs). I'm sure you already know this, but just thought I'd point it out just incase
