Ive got a 81 f-100 2x4 stepside..with a brake problem. I recently replaced the rear pads, axle seals, bled the breals, and the rear brakes are adjusted properly. Whenever i hit the breaks, and its a little bit slippery out, my left front tire will lock up. Which is scary as hell when its icy out. Does anyone know what the problem could be? I was thinking the proportioning valve. By the way, my pedal feels really loose, and is touchy as well.
Jack both front wheels off the ground and turn the tires by hand while someone pushes the brake pedal. See if the problem is possibly the right side is not working as soon as the left. The right side caliper may be hanging up in the slides.
I would make sure there is not grease or fluid on the left side rotor.
If you see no problems, you may just need to make sure you put the tranny in neutral if you have an automatic, before you come to a stop on icy roads. It's very common for the engine to be idling a little fast, and with an auto tranny in icy weather, the back wheels will carry you right on through a intersection, with both fronts locked up.
