The bill -

Hello all.

2000 PSD Dually 6-speed manual 4X4

Here is the list of service I had done to the truck - Unfortunately the detailed list of questions I presented for review and comment were not carried out.

It seems to me that changing fluids is the business of choice;

The truck pulls slightly to the left at speed around 25 and lower, more pronounced at 15-0mph. Please road test.

Response from mechanic (I didn't feel anything abnormal)

Please check and adjust all tire pressure

Response - (not done)

Please check clutch pedal play at top and grabs close to the floor.

Response from mechanic (no problems)

Please confirm cackle knock - annoying and loud. Have they heard of drilling and installing an orifice bleed at the end of the rail and routing the bleed fuel back to the tank.......

Response from mechanic - whered'ya hear that? The internet? Just turn the radio up.

So;

I took a closer look at the passenger side brakes and the rotor is rough at the top of the rotor and may be providing a rough gripping surface for the pads. Taking the truck to my "normal" mechanic so he can resurface the rotors and new pads.

Air pressure in the passenger outboard rear wheel was 35psi - inner tire at 55psi - adjusted this and the pull was diminished slightly. So air pressure definately has an effect of brake pull.

now the bill

what was done:

oil change
fuel filter
oil filter
air filter
front and rear diff oil change
tranny oil changed
diagnostics checked

oil filter - $17.42
qts oil - $37.10
5 qts RP85140 - $46.15
3 qts RP90wt - $29.55
10 synchromax royal purple - $63.00
2 antifreeze - $21.90
1 PA4110 air filter - $24.64
1 INF4591 fuel filter - $25.21

labor - $25 for changing the oil-filter and lube
Labor - F/R diffs - $125.00
Labor - tranny oil change and coolant - $125.00
scan for codes - $85.00

total cost - $720.85

My bitch is not the price - my bitch is I asked for even more work to be completed.

One of the things that I make sure I do is listen to my customers and then DO WHAT THEY WANT!!!

Good grief. A steering pull complaint and they don't even check the tires?!?!?!?!

alot of the service seems like it is done on a computer, and not done with "human" hands as it should be. plus their rates are outrageous. i have a set or two of clothes i designate for working on my truck when i know i will be getting dirty. that way i dont get everything but school clothes dirty. i will try everything once!

Speaking of the stealership rates, I'm looking at a bill right now :$33.75 per half hour for labor! I'm ashamed to say that I had them replace my fuel pump.

Rampage,

Be thankful they didn't arbitrarily decide that it was a two-hour job to replace that pump.

I'm definately sorry to hear of your lousy experience (and those of many others on this site) with dealers. I too have had more bad experience than good.

However, just to give credit where it is due, I have been visiting a local Ford dealership just a few miles from my home and business for the past 4 years and I've been impressed pretty much every time I go in for service. I try to do as much as I can myself to save money (their rates are pretty high as noted by others here).

I too have noticed that they charge based on "book rates" for the work they do even when they acknowledge that they completed the job in less time - but I'm told this is standard practice and generally protects customers from "slow" working mechanics.

Also, on one recent visit, I purchased a lock actuator for the front driver door (to install myself later with info I found on this site). I tossed it in the front seat and then left the truck for other service. When I returned, the box was in the truck but empty. After talking with the service counter guys, they told me they put it in for me AT NO CHARGE simply becuase they kept my truck a full day longer than promised b/c they were swamped with unplanned work.

Nice guys, good service. I'm happy and only wish I could find dealers or non-dealer mechanics as good for my other vehicles.

Come to Seattle and that's a good deal. Most of the dealer rates here are pushing $100.00 hr.

I get my fluids changed at valvoline oil change, have had good luck with them, they service all the 7.3L ambulances in my area and seem to do a good job. Also alot cheaper than the stealership, can also get $5 off coupons online and print them out.. (for oil change) oil change runs about $50 with coupon

Private shop

Apparently they service fleet style vehicles such as fire departments, etc. -

And to boot they wanted to know when I was putting in an exhaust, chip and air filter.

After paying 85.00 labor to read the codes in the computer (at 75.00 per hour how could reading the codes take an hour?), they surely won't be replacing my turbo pipe.

- sucks getting ----ed.

I worked for a private auto repair company when I got out of HS. After a while you learn tricks and start beating the book. We cut a deal to split the book time 50/50. If I beat the book by 2 hours I got 50% of that charged labor.

Back then it was 45/hr and I was making 6/hour.

I worked hard. That's incentive.
