Alright, I recently bought a 02 F250 S/C SB with a 5.4 Auto and 80,000 Miles and i'm having a problem with it pinging uphills. I started by replacing the fuel filter, which was very restricted, but it still pinged. I then filled the tank with premium and the pinging was greatly reduced but still there. I know that is not the proper fix as these engines are designed to run on 87 Octane fuel. Any ideas as to where i should be checking next? All i've done on the truck is a K&N FIPK and its properly installed and tight.
Thanks for any input
A few options here.
Clean the maf could be dirty(oil from K+N filter finds its way on there)we've seen it happen around here.Spray with some carb cleaner made for throttle bodies.
Next
The knock sensor, the bad news is its under the intake manifold.
The knock sensor retards the timing via the pcm based on input from it.
Before I'd change it though have a dealer put there computer on the truck
and chk it out
Are there any chk engine lights on,has it ever came on and went off?
Do the lights light up when you start the truck?(burnt out bulb)
I've never reoiled the filter yet but i'll try that cleaner. The engine light does illuminate before starting but has never illuminated while driving. Is it possible that the knock sensor is sending a weak signal? Any other ideas? O2 sensor possibly?
A lot of times "pinging", or detonation can be caused by excessive carbon deposits in your piston chambers and on your valves. These deposits are usually from using a cheaper fuel with little or no detergent additives which allow these accumulations to build up over time. What happens is the carbon deposits store heat in the chamber which cause the fuel to ignite in the piston chamber prior to the ignition of the spark plug. If the pinging gets worse when the engine warms up then this could be the problem. Having someone do a BG fuel injector/intake clean and service will help take care of this. I have this done on my cars about every 10k because I use the cheapest fuel I can find.
Forty Fords was right about other causes. If you clean the MAF sensor, my mechanic recomends an electical parts cleaner, sometime a carb cleaner can be to harsh. Also, make sure you don't touch the thin wire inside.
I've also seen improperly gapped or overworn plugs cause this.
I think that BG induction service would be a good place to start. We do them at work here so i'll give that a try. I'll let you know if it helps at all.
Just a note on gas, I did see you tried hi test with little luck, gas and diesel nowadays is crap! my 18 wheeler has valve rattle unless I use additive, been to cummins a couple of times, my 05 250 5.4 pings alighly with trailer in tow unless I use mid-grade.
I have converted many buddies over to mid-grade as the difference in costs are recouped in better mileage and keeping engine cleaner.
Yes, your engine is designed for regular, but show me a enginer who has a perfect world.
