I have a nice tailgate from a 1963 Ford truck. I was told it is the same as a 1958 and a couple of other years. What do you think it might be worth? It has all of the original hardware including the rubber over the chains. This is the factory paint.
It is NOT a unibody tailgate.
It was used on the separate-boxed trucks from '57 to '63, and even later on 4x4's.
I am tempted to say it's worth whatever someone will pay, but realistically I would guess, since those are not being reproduced to my knowledge, that if it's in as good a shape as it looks that it could fetch over $300 on the right day.
Thanks Ringo Fonebone. I got the tailgate out of a garage attic when I was getting the one for my '72 down. It has been in the attic for at least 30 years. The truck it came off burned up in a garage fire about 20 years ago.
It is in as nice as shape as it appears n the picture.
That tailgate is a beauty. It's worth $300 minimum but you might get more. I looked for 3 years at Carlisle before I got mine. Thats a really good one. Good luck
I realize its not new, but its original including the hardware. The tailgate chains still have the rubber covers on them.
The fact that its an original, not a reproduction doesn't hurt its value, it actually increases it.. a lot!! I would say $400 (the cost of a reproduction) would be a minumum to ask for a near mint complete original, depending on a buyer and how bad he wants it, you could maybe even get twice that.
I never new tailgates brought that much. May have to think about selling the one have for 53-??. It's not as nice as that one, but it's still in pretty good shape. Good luck with whatever you do with it Rubiranch.
Hot rod, the '53 is not worth quite so much because they are not all that rare , and are repro'd by several places depending on if you want letters or not.
They used those same tailgates into the late seventies on Flaresides. The one like he has here were only on some of the least popular trucks Ford made.

The quality of some of the repo stuff I've seen isn't always as good as the orginal stuff. I purchased a complete bed for my 51 F1, of course it was a big improvment over the bed that was on there. They tend to leave a lot of sharp edges exposed these days. The tail gate especially had some sharp edges and I cut my finger pretty good installing it. I had to stop and deburr everything at that point, for $1,800.00 you would think they would have already done it. My point being, that tailgate should be a lot more desireable than a repo unit.
