when my engine is ideling i can hear a light clicking noise coming from like down by the engine or toward the tranny im just wandering if it is a slight nock or what???????? thanx kevin
Ok. I was thinking if you had a manual that it could be the release bearing but seems as how you have an auto... Honestly, without being able to hear it I'm kinda in the dark. Does it seem to come from the top or the bottom of the engine? If it's coming from the top it could be the valves tapping. If it's coming from the bottom it could be the main bearings or connecting rods. Just a thought. Hope this kind of helped a little.

[font color=red size=2]Try feeling around the exhaust for air leaks (that would indicate an exhaust leak) - but only when the exhaust is cold.
Try to hear if it's coming from one side or the center of the engine. Might even want to crawl under it with it running and listen - Wheels blocked of course! See if it's noticable on one side or the other. If it has anything to do with the tranny it will be a lot louder under it. I have had dust covers rub on the torque converter or the torque converter bolts come loose - both caused a ticking sound. Good luck...
You don't have tube headers do you? If so you can often hear the valves through them.
Rod/main bearings usually show up under float/load conditions. Exhaust leak is possible. You might have some one push a rag into the exhaust outlets while you listen to see if the back pressure helps you find the leak.
Use a 3 foot piece of garden hose to listen and locate the noise. If it is in the engine use a big screw driver aganst the engine and your ear to locate noise.

79,
Keep it simple. Your describing an exhaust leak. Simply look for a black stain on your exhaust pipe. It will almost certainly be at a joint or seam of some sort.

If you don't find an exhaust leak, you could try removing one spark plug wire at a time from the distributor (when the engine isn't running!)
After removing the wire, start the truck up and see if the noise goes away, if it does, then you have a worn crank/rod bearing. Repeat this for all wires looking for the knock to disappear.
