I bought a 3 ton floor jack with 2 jackstands for $88.00 and 2 more jackstands for $17.00 from Lowes Home Improvement Kobalt brand they are excellent and I use them alot.
I have Craftsman 2 1/2 ton and 6 ton jack stands for cars and pickups. For big jobs I have a 22 ton Gray support stand and a set of cotton wood shipping blocks from John Deere.
I stay away from the stands that use a pin to change the height. Too afraid of shear. After I build my shop I will probably get some real ones but for now I have some latching types.
I bought a (yang lin) floor jack from wards 20 years ago. Still works though it won't lift the front of my superduty(whole axle) it moans and groans but it'll do everything else.
I'm liking the wood idea in previous posts.
I bought two pairs of the largest Sears carries. I beleive they're six ton. Much more stable and don't have to be extended all the way on cars. Any of the two or three tons have to be all the way up to do anything on a truck. Also there only as good as the surface there on since there designed for concrete. Id agree you could knock a car off them in dirt and wouldnt't recomend going under any vehicle haphazardly supported on dirt. It may be too late once your truck is coming down on you.
i acctually broke both jackstands and a hydraulic jack on my 250, lickily the peices of wood saved my face from mashing into the DANA TTB on the front end. i just layed back to rest a few secs and then CRACK the jack and stands give out. thats something that will bring you to reality real quick.
