my brother has an '82 cheby crew cab with a 350. as far as i'm aware the motor is pretty much stock. i believe the previous owner removed the oem air filter and replaced it with an open air filter setup. the truck gets at best 8mpg (probably closer to about 5mpg).
My question: to help fuel milage would he be better off removing the open air filter setup (which is just pulling hot air from the engine compartment) and replacing it with a oem style air box? then possibly run some ducting up to the grill to get some cold air to the air filter. or it there something else that he could try?
Especially in warm and cold weather. I've seen carbs ice up when there is no functional heat riser. Always a thrill driving down the freeway, taking your foot of the gas, and it's on "cruise control" .

Well, a carbed V8 brick from the 80's aint gonna get any kind of good of mileage, a tune up and a 2 barrel carb would help. Might loose power with the 2 barrel though.
Early 80s model ANYTHING gets bad mileage and power.
To really get anything, you really need an engine with better innards, not the smog era cam, valves, pistons, etc.....
If you're going to get mileage like that, best find a decent TBI-era 454 (unless you want to convert a Vortec-headed 350 to carb) with some more grunt to it. It'll drop right in.
