I got my truck ('01 F250 SDSC 4x4, 5.4L, auto w/4.10 LS) about 3 weeks ago. I just got back from a 700 mile trip this past weekend, and got an average of about 12-13 mpg. I'm very happy with the truck, but would like a little better mpg on trips. Not looking for, or expecting significant fuel economy (otherwise would have gotten a 4-banger), but would like to know what are the best mods / additions I can make that would provide the best benefit. I've got a bed cover, but pretty much everything else is stock. Should I look at a K&N replacement filter or full FIPK; full new exhaust (headers) or just cat-back, ect.. Would appreciate comments / ideas from those who have tried these things on trucks similiar to mine. Also, cost versus return on investment is an issue. Thanks in advance.
I've installed a Borla Cat-back, underdrive pulleys, a home made FIPK, a Retrax Tonneau, and swapped all fluids to Amsoil synthetics. The engine I'm running Mobil 1.
18.8 mpg is about the norm. Had a 20.7 on one long trip.
my wifes 00 f150 stepside 5.4 3.55 ls has the k&n filter,3 in. single cat back, and a diablo chip and am getting around 22 mpg. was only getting around 15 before mods. a few mods like this to your 250 will work but will prob. only increase to 15-18 mpg
with my 02 super cab 5.4 auto on 33's and 3.73's on a trip to las vegas from san diego i got 17MPG and the only thing i did for mods is remove the air silencer and install a k & n replacement filter and a cheap summit racing $29.00 muffler and exited it out the side before the tire with clamps from autozone.
my next mod will be underdrive pulleys then maybe some 4.30's
I've seen a thing on E-bay that goes just inside the air intake (after filter) that spins the air as it enters the engine. They claim you can get as much as 31% higher mileage. Don't know if it's crock or not but it's cheap and if you get 10% better it's worth it. If anyone else is familiar with this thing let us know.....Thanks Ed
P.S. I just bought a 2001 loaded Lariat 5.4 4X4 so I need to save gas too... : )
8018735658 is the item number. This auction claims up to 35% and the buy now price is 17.95. Talk about bang for the buck. But maybe it's a gimmick. I have no personal experience with this product...................................Regards Ed
I'm interested in the same thing. I'm looking at a used F250 with the 4.5 but will need to get the best mileage I can from it. A lot of people are telling me I will never do better than 10-12MPG. I'd like at least 15 over or more on trips and by the looks of a few of these posts it is possible. Any other info would be great.
I have done alot of reading about the item on e-bay you are talking about; most of the opinions I have heard are that it is a sham, however I have no personal experience with the product. Regarding the underdrive pulleys, do they help that much, and if so, where did you get them from? Thanks.
I did install a K&N FIPK on my 02 F250 5.4 and I did notice a slightly better throttle response but not much increase in gas mileage. K&N claims a 10.9 HP increase at 4400 RPM but I don't think i've ever been able to make use of that. Does make a nice sound around 2000 RPM though, if you're into that kind of thing.
I never really understood how underdrive pullies give you more power. Can someone explain that?
Signed,
Not the sharpest tool in the shed.
Technically, underdrive pullies don't give you more power. Anything that your engine spins, require some power to do so. Underdrive pulleies slow the alternator, A/C compressor, water pump, etc, which in turn takes less power to run them. This allows that remaining power to pull the vehicle.
