I have a 1978 Ford F-150 xlt with a 351M and i'm just curious to see what others are getting in fuel mileage for the same Truck or what i should be getting? I'm getting about 12 miles to the gallon.
Thanks in advance

I have a '77 4x4 Ranger with a 351m that used to get around 8 to 10mpg. She has an AT and 33x12.5x15" tires. She was never timed except by ear, needs a new carb and has since worked her way down to about 6 to 8mpg. Luckily I don't have to drive her far.
gene mckinney,
hi there,
i had 4 if the 351m in the past and i got the same as you did, the best i got out of one was 14 mpg and it was in a 79 bronco,i
now drive a 1975 f250 with a 360ci in it, with c-6 trans, i'm getting around 16 mpg with it, and it's only got 89,870 miles on it from new,i love it, only paid $500.00 for it too, well take care and injoy your ford, lol
I always see people asking about gas mileage on here.....it's a full sized pickup, MPG went out the window when you got in the truck! If you want to get higher MPG, drive a Ranger.
My 2wd 77 w/351, t-18 4speed, dual straight piped glasspack exhaust and 3.00:1 rear end gets a max of 13mpg and has 168000 miles on it original untouched engine no carb or engine work for over 10 years. engine uses a quart of oil every 1000 miles or so.
My 4wd 79 w/351, c6 auto, 3 inch single flowmaster exhaust, and 3.50:1 rear end gets close to 11 -13. I am not sure because I havent tested it recently. It has only 90 miles on the heavy duty rebuilt auto and t case with new gaskets and bearings. The front wheel bearings are a month old too. The engine uses no oil and has about 600 miles on rebuilt 2150 carb. BEFORE the tranny/t-case rebuild I got EIGHT MPG! The mechanic who rebuilt my trans said the 3rd and reverse clutches were completely gone and the yoke or u joint I think, Broke when He removed it so thats new too. That rebuild helped a lot.
And I drive in the country, hilly and stop and go between friends houses and school. I usually have my foot half throttle or more and go about 50 to 70. Yes I am a maniac
