I have an 01 Screw with the 5.4. The truck recently turned 100k so I took it to the local dealer for a spark plug change (too cold here to do it outside) and then the trouble started. Shortly after getting it back and 2/3 of the way into a 120mile trip I started getting the dreaded buck and snort run mode. I didn't have my Diablo Predator with me so I took it to the nearest dealer at my destination and they found that the other dealer didn't bother to clean anything and installed the #4 COP back on the plug with a piece of "animal feces" (rodent?) between the plug and the COP. Truck runs fine but I keep getting a SERVICE ENGINE light. When I check codes with my Predator I get nothing showing. I clear the codes anyway and the light goes away but then shows up about 3 starts later again with no code. What gives? I noticed that my gas cap doesn't "click" anymore when I put it on. Could I be having a vent problem? Wouldn't that show up on the code reader? Any help/ideas would be appreciated.
OK, I went back out again today to clear the light and NOW I have codes. The P1000 code mentioned previously, and a P0174 "engine running lean bank 2" so I will research things from there. Thanks for your help.
Hey DeanG.
Once you get the PO174 fixed the P1000 will remain, and clear its self. The truck will just have to be driven a while till the drive cycle is compleated. at which time the 1000 code will go away by its self.
I have a question about the po174. I've replaced all oxygen sensors and still get the code. Second, which is bank 2? Sorry for my ingorance but I can't seem to find the information. You see, I was previously a chevy owner.
You may have a vacuum leak or a restricted fuel filter, These can also cause lean codes. Bank 1 is rh side, bank 2 is lh side. When sitting in the drivers seat.
Thanks for the info. I've replaced the fuel filter, but that was some time ago. I just recently discovered the thing has 4 oxygen sensors. Anyway, I can get the code cleared, it lasts for about 3 or 4 days, and then it comes on again. I haven't started chasing vacuum leaks yet and it doesn't run rough like a bad injector. At least I know which is bank two now. You can't imagine how many parts stores I've been to and they can't answer that question. My chilton's doesn't even have that info. When I changed spark plugs, the plug furthest foward on the driver's side looked like it had been running lean. I'm not seeing any water in the oil and vice versa. Do you know of any particular problem that can cause just one cylinder to run lean? Like I said, I don't see anything that leads me to think I have a cracked head or something like that. Thanks again
Check for vacuum leaks from the rear of the intake, expecially from where the pcv hose connects. Otherwise, you might just have a lazy o2 sensor. It will be the one in front of the converter on the lh side, the rear one is only monitoring the function of the converter.
