Pulled the tranny out of our '71 3/4 ton. 390 CI 2BBl.
Pressure plate has a broken arm, so we are replacing the clutch, pressure plate and throw-out bearing while it is apart.
Flywheel is a little dirty. Black stuff from the clutch burning.
What is the best way to clean it? Do we pull it and take it somewhere or can it be done on the engine?
The 390 cid engine requires dropping the pan, and rear main caps, and requires additional work to replace the rear main seal.
One the fly wheel has been resurfaced, use Brake Kleener sold at most automotive parts store to clean the flywheel. Use brake kleener to clean the pressure plate and to clean the flywheel if it get grease on it.
Check the condition of the pilot bearing on the rear of crankshaft.
Use grease on the output shaft on the transmission prior to installation.
i would use brake clean and resurface it, i would also install a new pilot bearing. i woudl use the roller kind like used in the f 500 and bigger trucks they are 9.00
